The Edge of the World

Glasgow becomes the setting for Shay and Ollie’s next encounter after Belfast: a meeting at the University of Glasgow Library that moves from the public floors into a small, private room. The library’s layered spaces frame a reunion marked by what has happened between them and by what remains unsaid.

The planned meeting

Ollie messages Shay to meet him at the University of Glasgow Library the following day at 11 a.m. Shay, still tired after a performance and a long sleep, initially wonders whether he has imagined the message. Its practical purpose appears to be work, but Ollie’s having obtained Shay’s number makes the invitation notable to him all the same.

From public floors to a private room

When they meet, the encounter follows a physical route deeper into the library. Ollie directs Shay upstairs; they take the lift to the eighth floor, where Ollie selects books, and then climb to the highest level. He has a key to a private room, smaller than the room in Belfast: it has no windows, and two chairs are crowded around a compact table. There is not enough room for the stack of books Ollie has carried up four flights of stairs, so he puts them on the floor and opens his laptop on the table.

A setting for what remains unresolved

The library meeting follows the frantic kisses Shay and Ollie shared in Belfast and Ollie’s subsequent absence for twenty-four hours. Shay remembers both developments as he tries to find words, but the reunion initially feels as if nothing has changed. The move from the library’s public floors to a closed, windowless room gives their encounter a more secluded setting; it does not, by itself, resolve the silence between them. Ollie turns immediately to the laptop, leaving the emotional significance of the meeting suspended alongside its apparent work purpose.
